Author Interview – Pamela Thibodeaux

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Unlike many authors, I never really dreamed of being a writer. Not that I can recall anyway. What inspired me to begin writing was disappointment in what I’d been reading.
When did you begin writing?
My writing career began 36 years ago in 5-subject notebooks. I was a ‘closet’ writer, too self-conscious and insecure to tell anyone what I was doing. That went on for about 11 years then I purchased my first used word processor. That’s when I began to feel like a writer but not until my mom and brother read and liked my work did I honestly think I had a talent to continue.
Is there a particular author whose work motivates you?
I absolutely love Nora Roberts romances.
What’s your favorite novel?
Actually my favorite novel is the Born In trilogy by Nora Roberts. There are many more I keep but those will never be loaned out. I’ve had to purchase new copies since I read them pretty regularly.
What inspired you to write The Inheritance?
The Inheritance was born out of a dream and a common phrase. I had a dream where my grandfather said about his and my grandmother’s life-long friend whom I called Aunt Ellen, “She left everything to you.” The phrase I’m referring to is, “life begins at forty” and it came to me like this….. They say life begins at forty but for Rebecca Sinclair that’s far from the truth. That simple statement was the impetus to the novel. My dream became hers and actually fruitioned into her inheritance of a home in the wine country of New York left to her by her biological grandmother whom she’d had no prior relationship with.
What type of schedule do you use when writing? How many hours a week do you write?
I used to write every morning, evening and on weekends but since 2009 that has not been my schedule. My writing is very sporadic now, although I hope (or rather need) to carve out some regular time in my schedule.
What do you do if you experience writer’s’ block?
Pray. Take a walk. Write something different (article, blog post, poem). Read. Usually writers block occurs when I’m trying too hard to make the story happen instead of letting the Holy Spirit and my characters lead me.
How long did it take to write The Inheritance?
About 6 months for the initial story which was published in 2007. The version featured today is the updated/revised edition which came out last year.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on 2 collections of short stories for PBG and one I might pitch or may self-publish. I also have a couple of novels and non-fiction books in the works.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
Reading is by far my favorite pastime.
