A Visit to a Drum Circle
When I was writing The Street Singer, I searched for information about Asheville, NC, the story’s setting. I came across an article about a drum circle. I had no idea what that was until I dug a little deeper. When I did, I knew I had to include a scene in the book that took readers to this event.
The Asheville drum circle meets every Friday night from April through October in Pritchard Park in downtown Asheville. Everyone is welcomed. You can watch, drum, dance, or play whatever percussion instruments you can dream up. And it’s FREE.
Drum circles originated in the US during the late 1960’s, although the origin of drumming dates back to Africa in the 12th century. The drum circle criterion is that it’s informal and improvised, not designed to be a performance or the practice for performing.
